Educational institutions thu s increasingly shape our individual life course. They are co-responsible f or the social cohesion\, well-being\, and prosperity of the population in Switzerland. Education is integrating\, qualifying and enables the transmi ssion of central values and knowledge to the next generation. For this ver y reason\, the sociology of education also critically asks under what cond itions education fails to unfold this potential and through which structur es and processes education can lead to stigmatisation\, exclusion\, and in equality\, thus threatening social cohesion.\\r\\nAt this 5th meeting of t he Sociology of Education Research Network of the Swiss Sociological Assoc iation\, we would like to address these two paradoxical perspectives on ed ucational institutions in Switzerland\, also including institutions of non -formal learning such as early childhood education\, extracurricular cours es\, or continuing education.\\r\\nIn doing so\, we focus on the correspon ding particularities of the institutions studied. These particularities in clude\, among others\, the structure of pre-compulsory\, compulsory\, and post-compulsory education\; the question of political responsibility (educ ation\, world of work\, social welfare)\; the uniquely Swiss situation of educational federalism\; the question of access regulations or of financin g.\\r\\nAuthors are invited to submit proposals that focus on the potentia ls as well as on the problematic issues of particular educational institut ions in Switzerland. Institutionalised educational processes have extended biographically backwards with "early childhood edu cation\, care and education" and forwards with "lifelong learning".
